Jennifer McCown
Hi, I’m Jen McCown! I’m a SQL Server database administrator, speaker, and consultant. I’ve been working with SQL Server since 1999, and teaching since 2008. I received the Microsoft Most Valuable Professional award in 2011 and again in 2012 for my contributions to SQL Server education.
So, what do I do? Simply speaking: I take care of your SQL Servers. I deliver training to make your team self-sufficient. And, I help you screen and hire new database personnel, if you need to expand your full-time database team.
SQL Server Care and Feeding
Tell me what you’re worried about most. Disaster recovery? Backups and maintenance? Performance? Reporting? Upgrades and migrations? We’ll discuss your concerns, look into them, plan and execute the next steps.
While we’re at it, I’ll perform system evaluations to identify unknown issues. I document all my work and findings, and keep you in the loop at every step.
Teaching Team Autonomy
I’m a consultant, so I don’t expect to be around forever. I’m usually called in to fix problems or help clients with specific projects. What you’re going to need after I’m gone is someone who knows a backup from a transaction log.
If your SQL support team consists of “accidental DBAs”, I can start them on essential introductory materials to bring them up to speed. If you have junior to mid-level administrators, I can mentor them on the use of best practices and the best SQL Server resources.
Candidate Screening and Interviewing
It takes a good DBA to know a good DBA. If you’re interested in building your team, I can help with the hiring process, whether you’d like referrals, tech screenings, or assistance with full interviews.
